Starcraft 2 Protoss Units and Structures
Here is a complete list of all the Starcraft 2 Protoss Units and
Structures. I ended up breaking the structures and units down by type to make this section easier to
First off, in this section, I will provide a broad overview of the Starcraft 2 Protoss units and
structures, along with a flowchart displaying building technology trees and units produced at each building. You
will find this below.
For specifics on units and buildings, I have divided the units and buildings into 5 sections as
Protoss Ground Units
Protoss Air Units
Protoss Support Units
Protoss Basic Structures
Protoss Advanced Structures
The Protoss basic structures section, as advertised, contains all of the structures found under the "basic" tab
in-game, whereas the advanced structures contains all the structures found under the "advanced" tab in-game.
Note that "support units" includes both air and ground units that fall into the support class. I will note this
in both the ground and air unit sections in case anyone is confused.

Here is a technology tree for the Protoss Race (more detailed trees can be found in the basic and advanced
Note that Protoss has a "Tier 1.5" building. This is the building that allows Protoss players to get to Tier 2
(all Tier 2 units and buildings require vespene gas; the Cybernetics Core does not).
For Terran and Zerg, there are no "Tier 1.5" buildings that are a requirement to the advanced tiers. For
example, Terran build a Barracks and to unlock Tier 2 (Factory) and Zerg build a Spawning Pool to unlock Tier 2
This is not necessarily a downside for the Protoss as it gives allows the Protoss player to forego Vespene gas
(in some situations) for longer than other players of other races.
This allows Protoss players to build a decent amount of units and tech up at the same time. Combined with the
Chrono Boost (Nexus ability) and ease of Protoss building, Protoss are able to ramp up their main base faster than
the other races.
Additionally, Protoss players are able to build a formidable army without an expansion, unlike Zerg players who
require more resources.
In the early game situation, Protoss players will have more workers, units, and buildings than players of other
races, making Protoss one of the stronger races currently in game. The cost of this ability is being susceptible to
fast rushes (Reapers, Zerglings).
The Protoss also pay dearly to build Tier 3 units. In most situations, Protoss players will not build any of the
Tier 3 buildings due to their prohibitive cost.
The best way to determine if you need Tier 3 buildings is to scout. If your enemy has no detection (particularly
when playing other Protoss players), a Dark Shrine is a good building to get. If the opponent is massing marines,
you might want to make a few Colossi or High Templar (this requires a Robotics Bay or Templar Archives,
Another reason you might want advanced buildings is if your economy is vastly superior to your enemy's. If you
get put into one of the lower leagues in random team and are working your way up the ladder, you may need to make
up for a bad partner by expanding the map.
If you are harvesting many more minerals, it may be to your benefit to build more advanced Starcraft 2
Structures and Units. This is much more common when the games run on longer or when your enemy is
Terran (large infantry masses require advanced Protoss units to stop). This is a perfectly acceptable
situation (though games that run that long are boring in my opinion)!
This page is just an introduction to Starcraft 2 Units and Structures. For more particular units strategies, see
the various units sections in the links above or on the side panel (ground units guide, air units guide, etc).
